What is Causes Dry Eye?

Dry eye is an uncomfortable condition caused by a decrease in tear production, imbalance in tear composition, and poor quality tears. Dry eye can also be triggered by age, taking certain medications like antihistamines, and having laser eye surgery.

Common Symptoms of Chronic Dry Eyes

There are several ways that dry eye may present itself. You can experience the following symptoms:

  • Water eyes
  • Eye fatigue
  • Blurred vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Red eyes
  • Burning, stinging, or scratchy sensation in the one or both eyes
  • Have trouble driving at night or wearing contacts

Dry Eye Treatment

If you are suffering from dry eyes, there are several treatment options that can help decrease your symptoms. Your optometrist may recommend using artificial tears to keep the eyes moist. These are medicated drops that are applied directly onto the eyes. If this doesn't work, your doctor may suggest eye inserts. Eye inserts are placed under the lower eye lid and eyeball, and acts like artificial tears, keeping the eyes moist. In severe cases, your eye doctor may recommend surgery to close the tear ducts and prevent tears from evaporating quickly. We will discuss all of these options with you before any decisions are made.
