Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of adult vision loss in the US. Fortunately, the AdaptDX test can help prevent vision loss by detecting at least 3 years earlier.

What is AMD?

AMD is a disease that causes a part of your retina called the macula to slowly deteriorate as you get older. The macula is responsible for your central vision, which allows you to do things like read, watch TV, recognize faces, and drive.

As AMD progresses, symptoms may include distortion of straight lines or dark and blurry central vision. Testing with the AdaptDx helps your doctor find the disease before this happens.

Are you at risk of developing AMD?

One of the earliest symptoms of AMD is poor or failing night vision. There are also several risk factors for AMD:

  • Age 50 or older
  • Family history of AMD
  • Being white and/or female
  • Smoker or past smoker
  • Being overweight
  • Heart disease, high blood pressure or high cholesterol

Should you be tested for AMD?

If you are having trouble seeing or driving at night and/or risk factors, an AdaptDX screening test will likely be advised.

How does the test work?

The AdaptDX tests your ability to adapt from bright light to darkness. It is completely painless and easy to perform. Better still, it provides a straightforward, objective score to help your doctor know whether you have AMD so that measures can be implemented right away to help prevent vision loss.
